2019 WheelsTV POV of the Year Award Goes to the 2016-2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata

CAMBRIDGE, MA (June 4, 2019) –
At the New England Motor Press Association’s (NEMPA) annual Technology Conference and Awards Banquet held on Wednesday, May 29th, at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, the 2019 WheelsTV POV of the Year Award (POVY) was presented to the 2016 – 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

The POVY recognizes motor vehicles that have proven themselves in day-to-day use for at least two years by providing dependable, trouble-free service and good consumer value.

When announcing the recipient of the POVY, WheelsTV CEO Jim Barisano pointed out the MX-5’s “fun factor” that played heavily in NEMPA’s and WheelsTV’s voting, “If you’ve ever had the opportunity to drive the MX-5, you’ve probably experienced what Mazda calls “Jinba Ittai,” that special moment when horse and rider are perfectly in synch. In this case, its man and machine. That’s what makes the Mazda MX-5 Miata so much fun to drive!”

Accepting the POV of the Year Award for Mazda North American Operations was Trevor Smith, District Manager, who stated: “Thank you so much, Jim, for this special honor. This recognition honors the craftsmanship and human centric engineering behind this vehicle, and all our vehicles. It certainly helps Mazda to celebrate 30 years of delivering smiles through the MX-5 Miata.

Jim, as you mentioned, “Jinba Ittai” plays a critical role in the development process at Mazda. Its literal translation is “Horse and Rider as one,” which is pertinent to Yabusames, Japanese mounted archery in which a horse and rider communicate through tactile response and the horse adjusts its gait to allow the archer to release his arrow. Mazda aims to create the same relationship between car and driver and takes great joy in delivering this visceral experience all those who drive the Mazda MX-5 Miata.”
Wayne Carini, the host of Chasing Classic Cars on MotorTrend TV, hosted the event along with NEMPA President John Paul.

Said John, “NEMPA is proud to present this award in conjunction with WheelsTV. The selection of the Mazda MX-5 Miata was an excellent choice by virtue of its durability, functionality and the pure pleasure it brings to the driving experience.”
